Dryader, in Greek religion deities of nature, who live inside trees. Unlike other nymphs, the dryads are nameless, but according to the Homeric Aphrodite hymn, the life of the individual dryad depends on the life of the tree: if it is felled, she dies. Later in antiquity, some writers distinguished between dryads, which live in the forest as a whole, and hamadryads, whose lives are linked to the individual tree.
